Ferdinand Barbedienne
French, 1810 - 1892
Ferdinand Barbedienne was a French metalworker and art entrepreneur who was born on January 10, 1810, in Saint-Martin-de-Fresnay, France. He founded the Barbedienne foundry in 1838 in Paris, which became one of the most important and innovative bronze foundries of the 19th century. Barbedienne collaborated with many important artists of his time, including Antoine-Louis Barye, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, and Jean-Léon Gérôme, to produce high-quality bronze sculptures and decorative objects. The foundry also produced pieces inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art. Barbedienne's work was exhibited at international exhibitions, including the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, where he was awarded a medal. He passed away on March 21, 1892, in Paris, France.
