Arthur Umanoff
American, 1923 - 1985
Arthur Umanoff (1923-1985) was an American designer and artist known for his mid-century modern furniture and home decor. He was born in New York City and studied industrial design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
Umanoff's designs were characterized by their clean lines, simple forms, and natural materials such as wood and iron. He was particularly known for his innovative use of wrought iron in furniture design, creating chairs, tables, and shelves with intricate, delicate-looking patterns.
Umanoff's work was widely popular in the 1950s and 60s, and his designs were featured in popular home decor magazines such as House Beautiful and Better Homes & Gardens. He worked with several leading furniture manufacturers, including Raymor, Howard Miller, and Shaver-Howard, and his pieces can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
Umanoff also worked as an artist, creating paintings and sculptures in addition to his furniture and home decor designs. He died in 1985 at the age of 62, but his designs continue to be admired and collected by fans of mid-century modern style.
