Basilius Besler

Basilius Besler (1561 – 1629) was a German apothecary and botanist, best known for his monumental book on the plants of his native Bavaria, Hortus Eystettensis. He was born in 1561 in Beslau (now Wrocław) in Lower Silesia. After studying medicine and botany in Wittenberg and Montpelier, he established himself as an apothecary in Nuremberg in 1587. His most famous work, Hortus Eystettensis, was published in 1613 and contained 367 copperplate engravings of plants found in the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, the prince-bishop of Eichstätt. The garden was located near the town of Eichstätt in Bavaria and was considered one of the most important botanical gardens of its time. The book was a major achievement of its day and is still considered an important work of botanical illustration. Besler died in 1629 in Nuremberg.
