Bernard Chaet
American, 1924 - 2012
Bernard Chaet was an American painter and educator, born in 1924 in Boston, Massachusetts, and passed away in 2012. He was known for his abstract expressionist paintings, which often featured bold, gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colors. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and later at Yale University, where he received his MFA.
Chaet's work was heavily influenced by his experiences teaching art, and he often explored the relationship between art and education in his writing and lectures. He was a professor of art at Yale University from 1951 until 1956, when he joined the faculty at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where he taught for more than three decades.
Chaet's work is held in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. He was a recipient of several awards throughout his career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts grant.
