Charles H. Chapin
American, 1830 - 1889
Charles H. Chapin was a talented nineteenth-century painter known for his expressive portraits and radiant landscapes, which conveyed a lyrical view of the natural world. Chapin had a colorful and varied career, establishing studios in Boston, New York City, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and exhibiting at institutions throughout the United States, including the San Francisco Art Association and Seebold's in New Orleans. He illustrated Civil War scenes for "Harper's Weekly" and founded the Lotus Club in New York City before disappearing mysteriously in 1888. His paintings are now featured in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Butler Institute of American Art, among other prominent institutions.
