Light is the source of inspiration for artist Charly Bounan; it passes through the work and projects a subjectivity which engages only the one who is looking at, creating a colour explosion through pure geometric forms. In the 1990s, he began developing the concepts for his designs in Altuglas with research into colorimetry. Bounan’s earliest pieces are exuberant celebrations of color refracted and transmitted through the material.
In 2016, the artist found inspiration in another material – corten steel. This material echoed an early love: rust, the passage of time, the alterable and the unalterable. Therein began a long period of research and discovery into patina, keeping as leitmotif the essence and the essential.
Bounan also designs pieces that combine a mix of materials: hand-sculpted, charred (Calciné) and waxed or lacquered wood paired with various combinations of Altuglas, fur and steel.
