David Donovan Jensen

American, 1979

David Donovan Jensen was born in Eau Claire, WI in 1979. Jensen is an artist who works in an array of media including painting, installation, photography and video art. While he believes there are numerous facets in life that affect his work, he draws most inspiration from music.
Achieving stillness and beauty are Jensen’s top priorities with every composition he constructs. Even though he desires tranquility in his works, his pieces are multifaceted and complex in what they express. Jensen believes his paintings become a documentation of thinned out acrylic washes as well as a record of the areas where the works are created. His works on paper and canvas often pick up oil and acrylic fragments from the studio walls and floors he works on. Jensen refers to this as a “cross pollination” between his workspace, the studio, and his art. He also uses the laborious process of combining washes with spray paint and raw pigments along with using a power sander. Once a layer of paint is dry, he goes over that layer with the power sander and then adds more paint. He repeats this process until he feels the work is complete. By subtly exposing the texture and light through the many layers that he has built up, Jensen’s intricate yet serene visual story is projected in the surfaces that he creates.
Jensen has exhibited at the X, Y, & Z Gallery, Future Presence Gallery and the First Amendment Gallery in Minneapolis. In 2011 his video for Doomtree artist Sims was an official music video selection at the SXSW Film Festival. He has been featured in Rolling Stone, the Onion A.V. Club, MTV Buzzworthy blog, Pitchfork, Time magazine, Billboard.com, GQ.com, and Nylon magazine.
In addition to his endless hours in his painting studio, Jensen has spent the last three years art directing and producing video and sculptural content for the music industry and design world. His most recent collaborations were with Bon Iver, Colin Stetson, Herman Miller, and Polica. David Donovan Jensen currently lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
