Dieter Rams

German, 1932
Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer known for his work with the consumer products company Braun and for his philosophy of functional design. Rams was born in 1932 in Wiesbaden, Germany, and studied architecture and interior design at the Wiesbaden School of Art.

In 1955, Rams began working as an architect and interior designer for the German consumer products company Braun, where he would go on to spend over 40 years of his career. During his time at Braun, Rams developed a design philosophy that emphasized simplicity, functionality, and usability. He believed that products should be designed to be easy to use, with a focus on the essential functions and a minimal, uncluttered aesthetic.

Rams designed a wide range of products for Braun, including radios, record players, and electric shavers, many of which have become iconic examples of functional design. In addition to his work with Braun, Rams has served as a professor of industrial design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg and has continued to be an influential figure in the field of industrial design. His work has been exhibited in museums around the world, and he has received numerous awards and honors, including the Design Plus Award and the Lucky Strike Designer Award.
