Franz Hogenberg
American
Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) was a Flemish engraver and cartographer known for his detailed bird's-eye views and maps of cities in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He was born in Mechelen, Flanders (now Belgium), and later moved to Cologne, Germany, where he worked as an engraver and publisher. Hogenberg is most famous for his work in the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," a collection of city views and maps published in the late 16th century. The collection included over 500 views of cities from around the world, making it one of the most important sources of information about urban life during the Renaissance. Hogenberg's work was highly influential and helped to popularize the genre of city views and maps.
