Harry Bertoia

American, 1915 - 1978

Harry Bertoia was an Italian-born American artist known for sculpture, furniture design and sound art sculpture. He was born in 1915 in San Lorenzo, Pordenone, Italy and moved to Detroit Michigan at age 15 to live with his older brother Oreste. He studied at Cass Technical High School, Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts and later at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Bertoia began his studies as a painting student but soon gravitated to metal work and jewelry design. After marrying Brigitta Valentiner in 1943, he moved to California. In the 1950s he was offered a job working in Pennsylvania with Hans and Florence Knoll. His wire pieces became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll furniture. In the late 1950s Bertoia focusing on sculpture and sound sculpture. Harry Bertoia sculpture works can be found in museums across the United States. Bertoia died in 1978 leaving a legacy of jewelry, furniture and sculpture design. Harry Bertoia sculpture furniture & design remain popular today.
