Henricus Hondius
Dutch, 1597 - 1651
Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher. He was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and learned engraving from his father, Jodocus Hondius. Henricus worked with his brother-in-law, Jan Jansson, and they published a number of maps, atlases, and travel books under the name "Hondius and Janssonius."
Henricus Hondius is known for his cartographic work, including his "Atlas Minor," which was a popular atlas of the world that featured maps of various regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. He also created maps for other atlases and books, and his work was highly regarded for its accuracy and detail.
In addition to his cartographic work, Hondius was also an accomplished engraver and created numerous prints and illustrations, often depicting historical and mythological scenes. He died in Amsterdam in 1651, but his legacy continues to influence the fields of cartography and engraving.
