Honoré Desmond Sharrer
American, 1920 - 2009
Honoré Desmond Sharrer (1920-2009) was an American painter who was born on August 21, 1920, in Westport, Connecticut. She studied at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design.
Sharrer's work was characterized by its realism and social commentary. She often depicted scenes of everyday life, but with a surrealist twist that highlighted the absurdity of contemporary culture. Her paintings featured carefully rendered figures and objects, often arranged in complex compositions that played with space and perspective.
Sharrer's best-known work is perhaps her 1950 painting, "Workers and Paintings," which depicts a group of factory workers examining reproductions of famous paintings. The work was controversial at the time for its socialist and feminist themes, and was the subject of a widely publicized censorship case.
In addition to her painting, Sharrer was an accomplished muralist, and created works for a number of public spaces. She continued to paint and exhibit her work throughout her life, and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. She passed away on April 17, 2009, in Westport, Connecticut.
