Jacques Adnet

French, 1900 - 1984

The French Modernist, Jacques Adnet, is best known for his elegant and luxurious Art Deco designs. Born in 1900, Adnet studied at the Municipal School of Design in Auxerre, Burgundy, and the renowned École des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Adnet established his firm, J.J. Adnet, with his twin brother, and in 1928, joined La Compagnie des Arts Français—an atelier founded by the Art Deco design master, Sue et Mare. At La Compagnie des Arts, Adnet led a team of highly skilled artists and decorators that included such luminaries as Charlotte Perriand and Francis Jourdain.
Known primarily for his refined, elegant chairs, Jacques Adnet furniture is defined by its use of rich, sumptuous materials, including exotic woods, chromed metals, smoked glass, parchment, mirror, and leather. In addition to serving as director of La Compagnie des Arts, Adnet was President of the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs from 1948 to 1949 and was named Director of École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in 1970. Adnet died in 1984.
