Kaws

American, 1974
Brian Donnelly, professionally known as Kaws, is a celebrated American artist and designer, born on November 4, 1974. He is renowned for his distinctive use of figurative characters and motifs, many of which have been part of his artistic repertoire since the 1990s. Initially, Kaws painted these characters in 2D and later transformed them into stunning 3D sculptures. His sculptures vary greatly in size, ranging from just a few inches to towering ten-meter structures, and are crafted from a diverse array of materials such as fiberglass, aluminum, wood, bronze, and even a steel pontoon inflatable raft.

Kaws draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including traditional high art painters like Gerhard Richter, Claes Oldenburg, and Chuck Close. His work is often likened to that of Andy Warhol, known for its broad appeal across different markets and its ability to blur the lines between commercial and fine art. His pieces are prominently displayed in galleries and museums, and many are part of the permanent collections of public institutions. Notable collectors of his work include music producer Swizz Beatz, internet personality PewDiePie, musicians Pharrell Williams and Kid Cudi, as well as members of the popular South Korean group BTS. Several books showcasing his art have been published over the years.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Kaws continues to create captivating sculptures, acrylic paintings on canvas, and screen prints. Additionally, he collaborates commercially, particularly on limited edition toys, clothing, skateboard decks, and various other products.
