Kurt Versen

American, 1920
Kurt Versen was a German-born American industrial designer and lighting engineer, best known for his contributions to the development of modern lighting design in the United States. He was born in 1901 in Hanover, Germany, and died in 1997 in New York City.

Versen trained as an electrician in Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1927. He worked for a lighting manufacturer before starting his own company, Kurt Versen Company, in 1937.

Versen's lighting designs were characterized by their functional forms, innovative use of materials, and focus on the needs of the user. He was one of the pioneers of modern lighting design, a style that emphasized simplicity, functionality, and the use of new industrial materials.

Versen's most famous designs include the "Midi" wall sconce, which was made from aluminum and had a simple, geometric form, and the "Cobra" desk lamp, which had a flexible arm and a sleek, modernist design.

Versen's work was celebrated for its technical innovation and artistic beauty, and he received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Industrial Designers Society of America's first Lifetime Achievement Award in 1985. His legacy continues to influence lighting designers and engineers today, and his work is represented in many museum collections around the world.
