LangHall is a Philadelphia-based design and fabrication studio offering luxurious, limited edition furniture, hand-crafted with meticulous artistry. Spirited by architect Denise A. Hall, AIA and artist/builder Larry Lang, the company’s gracious and enduring pieces, rooted in traditional technique and modern styling, make a unique statement. “We strive for simplicity and quiet refinement”, notes Hall, “creating furniture with soul, honesty and a dash of offbeat humor - selective about what we make, how we make it, and why.” Rigorous silhouettes are offset by premier figured woods sporting hand-rubbed finishes and artful hardware.
Lang Hall’s distinctive aesthetic is a result of the juxtaposition and melding of disciplines and cultures –Hall the architect and Lang the artist/builder – and their shared knowledge of and appreciation for the history of art, craft and design. Together they bring an intuitive style, irreverence and impatience towards fads, and a respect for the art of making.
The collection is a seamless transition from the custom furniture and fittings the partners – in their individual professions – routinely provided to their residential, commercial, art gallery and hospitality clients. Now available to a broader audience, it is offered both to consumers and to design professionals. Elements may be customized for site-specific spaces.
About the Designers
Denise A. Hall, AIA is a practicing architect. Rio de Janeiro-born and Manhattan-raised of British and Brasilian parentage, she studied Environmental Design at Parsons/New School and Architecture at The City University of New York. In the early 80’s she was immersed in the downtown art scene designing for art dealers, artists and collectors, including Leo Castelli, Edward Thorp & San Francisco’s Crown Point Press. Her firm, D.A.Hall Architect, PC has completed a range of commercial and residential projects in the US, Europe and the Caribbean. Denise brings an architect’s eye with a clarity of intent, a precision of line and proportion, a poetry to the details and a thoughtful, versatile functionality.
Larry Lang is an artist and builder. New York- born, and Annapolis, Maryland-raised, he studied to be a painter at the San Francisco Art Institute and the New York Studio School. Moving to NYC in the early 1980’s, he too immersed himself in the downtown art scene showing at the Josh Baer Gallery leading to his paintings being acquired by numerous private and corporate collections. Like many young artists at the time, he worked as a carpenter and ultimately formed his own construction company, Lang Construction, LLC which still thrives, specializing in high-end residences and art galleries. Larry brings his exceptional eye and keen sense of craft to Lang Hall. Line, color, composition and boldly articulated and confident marks are the hallmark of his art and invaluable in the making of furniture.
