Max Kuehne

American, 1880 - 1968
Max Kuehne came to the U.S. from Halle, Germany in 1894. He studied at the William M. Chase School for a year with Robert Henri (1909-10). After his study in New York, Kuehne traveled in Europe supporting himself by selling portraits. When he settled back in New York he became good friends with Edward Hopper and pursued primarily landscapes. Kuehne's mature style was influenced by Seurat, Monet and Bonnard's use of color. He preferred plein-air painting and worked primarily in oils but used watercolors as well. He died in 1968.Biography courtesy of The Caldwell Gallery, www.antiquesandfineart.com/caldwell
