Peter Max

American, 1937
Peter Max is a German-American artist known for his vibrant, colorful paintings and prints that evoke the spirit of the 1960s and 70s counterculture. He was born on October 19, 1937, in Berlin, Germany, and his family fled to Shanghai, China, to escape the Nazi regime when he was still a child. Max's family eventually emigrated to the United States in 1953, settling in Brooklyn, New York.

Max began his career as a graphic artist, creating illustrations and designs for various publications, including The New York Times and Life magazine. He gained widespread popularity in the 1960s for his psychedelic pop art, which often featured bright colors and bold, graphic imagery.

Max's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has also created artwork for numerous high-profile events and projects, such as the U.S. bicentennial celebrations in 1976 and the Grammy Awards in 2004.

In addition to his art, Max has been involved in a range of philanthropic activities, including environmental causes, children's health, and world peace initiatives. He currently resides in New York City and continues to create new works of art.
