Virginia Granbery
American, 1831 - 1921
Virginia Granbery (1831-1921) is most known for her portraits and still life paintings. She also painted animal subjects and landscape views including the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Granbery was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and studied at the Cooper Institute and the National Academy of Design. She was a teacher at Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She lived in Manhattan with her sister, Henrietta Granbery (1829-1927), also an artist. Virginia was best known for her fruit still life painting.
Her works were exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy and the Brooklyn Art Association. Lithographer Louis A. Prang of Boston reproduced more of Virginia's fruit paintings than paintings of any other artist of that era. Her original works are now very rare to come by.
