Such qualities come through in her writing as she tells of her childhood in New York, her early years with George, the painful loss of a child, her role in public life, and lastly her time in the White House. Interspersed throughout the memoir are excerpts from her diary, providing a personal insight into her thoughts and experiences in the moment.
