The thoughts of a Roman poet. The most complete seventeenth-century translation of Martial's Epigrams into English, bound with the first edition of Killigrew's (1613-1700) New Epigrams in the same style. This edition substantially expands upon the first Killigrew translation published in 1689, being about half as long again.
The Epigrams were composed between AD 86 and 103 during the reigns of the Emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. They remain an important source of the spectacle and brutality of daily life in imperial Rome.
Two works bound in 1; first work second edition, second work first edition; 8vo (19.5 x 12.5 cm); engraved frontispiece, repaired to verso, divisional title, f. of ads to rear, ownership inscription in pen to title, obscured, later annotations in pencil and occasionally in pen, slight spotting, a little browned; modern half-calf, marbled baords, spine lettered in gilt, very good; [14], 96, 93-316; 158, [2]pp.
