French, late 19th Century
Height 37cm, width 17cm, depth 15cm

This unusual mantel clock is designed in the eclectic late 19th Century French style, particularly taking inspiration from the Neoclassical. Crafted from ormolu, brass and champlevé enamel, the clock is of classic rectangular shape and set on four delicate ormolu feet placed to each corner. From these, four columns rise up, and are decorated with champlevé enamel shafts and ormolu mounts. Between the columns, four bevelled glass panels encase the clock, and there are champlevé enamel friezes above and below. On the top of the clock, is a fine urn-shaped finial which is conformingly decorated. The circular dial inside the glass and brass case features Arabic numeral hour indices, and is surrounded by a champlevé enamel border.

The movement includes a false mercury pendulum, and is stamped 'AD Mougin', indicating the celebrated French clockmaker who worked in the mid to late 19th Century in the region of Montbeliard.
