Description Gilt bronze and marble cherub mantel clock by Raingo Frères
French, late 19th Century
Height 69cm, width 31cm, depth 31cm

This superb mantel clock, crafted from ormolu and white marble, is by Festeau le Jeune and Raingo Frères. The case of the clock is modelled as a full-length cherub playing a drum-form clock drum, the figure of the cherub carved from fine white marble. The clock drum is inset with a circular enamel dial inscribed with Roman numeral hour indices and Arabic numeral five-minute marks, each hour index contained within the loop of a painted floral garland. The cherub holds ormolu drumsticks, and is raised on a columnar ormolu base adorned with floral swags and rinceaux scrolls. While the clock dates to the late 19th century, the ormolu base and ormolu drumsticks are later.

The enamel dial is signed 'Festeau le Jeune / A Paris', and the movement is signed 'Raingo Fres / Paris'.
