Description This African-American carved wood head has a subtle and sensitive face with blue paint applied edging the mouth and eyes. In west African cultures indigo blue is applied to carving as a spiritual marker. The head has minimal wear and has a hole and slot in the bottom as I was told it was last used on a scarecrow in Michigan. It does have markings of something being tacked around the neck. I believe it had an earlier life or purpose as a folk sculpture. Because there is no Black stereotyping I believe it was a Black carver's work.
Mounted on a black wood base.
Styles / Movements African American, Folk Art
