Description
Graphic two-sided signboard with forty five star American flag.
American, possibly Washington, DC, dated 1902.
Inscribed in gold paint: “National Encampment G.A.R. Washington D.C. October 6, 1902.”
Ex-Kenneth Kohn. According to its inscription, this signboard was made to celebrate the 36th encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Washington, DC., October 6-11, 1902. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 for veterans of the Union forces of the Civil War. This signboard may have been designed for ceremonial purposes or to be hung from a trade sign during the run of the encampment, such as R. C. M. Barton & Son of 911 E Street Northwest whose specialty was “Flag decorations and Supplies of all Kinds.” -
