Born during the Second Empire, this decorations fixed under glass fashion concerns food shops, mainly bakeries but also creameries and delicatessens. First applied to the fronts, it quickly spread to the ceilings and then to the walls.
Each class of trade had its own motifs such as the representation of field work and mills for bakeries as well as fruits evoking pies or buns.
The ceilings were painted in oil on canvas and then cut into squares, which were glued to the back of a glass tile of the same size, using a transparent glue. These were fixed to the ceiling on a wooden frame with large screws.
