18th Century Indo-Portuguese Vargueno/Mini Cabinet
-
Description
Extremely rare, highly important and desirable colonial piece!
It is most likely an Indo-Portugese Vargueno mini cabinet, circa 1780, with strong Persian influences.
Vargueno’s are typically Portugese or Spanish.
The vargueno body is made of sandalwood, but it is covered entirely in early Indo-Portugese mosaic work using gold, colored stone, bone and ebony.
Stunning mosaic work!
Portugal, through its colonization of parts of Asia in the 17th and 18th centuries, had a strong influence on furniture being made in India in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many examples of Indo-Portugese Vargueno’s can be found. Typically, they are constructed using ivory and stained woods to depict neoclassical type scenes. These boxes command a hefty price tag!!
The front opens to reveal more exquisite mosaic work and a number of spice drawers, hence, being called a vargueno !!!
A truly unique piece!! A truly important piece!!
This should really be in a Museum! -
