18TH CENTURY WEDGWOOD BLACK BASALT VASE

Documentation Signed
Period 18th Century
Dimensions
H. 9 in; Diam. 6 in;
H. 22.86 cm; Diam. 15.24 cm;
Description Wedgwood black basalt ovoid vase. Very rare and early museum piece.

The basalt is quite different from mid-to-late-19th century basalt pieces. It is dense, heavy and looks much more like the Egyptian stone that Josiah Wedgwood was trying to emulate.

Elegant in its simplicity, the only decoration consists of a couple of turned rings along the waist.

England, 18th century
