Description These two caricatures are composed after a painting by French artist Honoré Daumier (1808-1879). He was best known as a printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century. Pairs or groups of lawyers are the subjects of many of Daumier’s drawings. Frequently the figures are contrasting visual types, as is seen with these two sculptors. One of the two has a small round face, and the other figure’s head is very long with very outstanding, sharp features. These caricatures were probably based on the painting “Two Lawyers Conversing,” dating around ca. 1860, the period the artist was at the top of his game.
