Description Last quarter of the 19th century rare and unusual wood carved and painted whirligig showing a full bodied black figure wearing a wood top hat, with applied tin formed face, tin hat brim, tin collar and jacket swallowtail, arched metal wire loop attached to the hat and suspending a tin and wood bumblebee, all in exceptional age cracked multi layered in use painted surface, contemporary metal table base. These whirligigs were reportedly given out from a large Illinois sawmill as premium gifts to patrons when they purchased enough wood to build a full barn.
