Description Bold, rustic and with an earthy free spirit, this wagumi style flower basket (ikebana) was designed and woven to evoke a sense of serenity an humbleness during the tea ceremony. Woven in a rather solid shape with an illusion of heavier mass, thinner bamboo stripes of irregular plating style form the body. Wider stacks of bamboo stripes were then inserted in with a free-wheeling spirit. The handle was also in keep with the wagumi spirit by using freely twisted bamboo stripes.
This wagumi style was found popular and specifically Japanese at the turn of the century, a departure in style from the formal and finely woven Chinese styles. The basket was lacquered in a reddish color with some residues of smokes. The interior is rather rustic with stripes end that were left unbridled by intention. Not signed.
