Description
A large marquetry box with a slightly domed top featuring stunning cube and diamond shaped inlays of kingwood, coromandel wood, satinwood and mahogany. Ebony edging around the top and base, solid mahogany on the very bottom. Kingwood along all inside edges. Kingwood, also known as Prince’s wood, was the most highly prized and expensive timber of the 18th and 19th century. Shipped in from South America by early merchants, it was only used for the finest pieces of furniture, musical instruments and occasionally clocks. Substantial and quality brass hinges and lock. Interior lined in pale red silk. Working lock and key.
