    A Monumental Pair of Gilt and Patinated Bronze Atlas Figures Sculptures, After the Antique, 20th Century.

    One supporting a terrestrial globe and the other supporting a celestial armillary sphere, standing with their heads lowered, hands to their sides and supporting an armillary sphere on their backs; together with a pair of white painted pedestals.

    An identical pair of Atlas figures were delivered to Louis XVI's library at Versailles in 1777. The design of those derive from the so-called Albani Atlases, which supported a granite cistern from the Villa Albani and which were engraved by Piranesi.

    A nearly identical pair was sold at Christies: 2009, Collection Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé,

    Another pair identical pair of Atlas figures was sold, Christie's, New York, 23 November 2010, lot 227 ($146,500)

    Overall height with pedestals: 93" high x 22" wide x 22" deep
    Bronze figures: 55" high x 12" wide x 12" wide

    Very good condition, bronze figures with rubbing and some surface marks throughout consistent with age.
