Airplane Trophy 1933 Century of Progress World's Fair Italy

Sold Sold
  • Description
In 1933 on the tenth anniversary of the Italian air force Italo Balbo, Marshal of the Air Force, flew twenty five Savoia Marchetti s. 55 seaplanes to the Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago. It was a tremendous achievement for the time. On the round trip remarkably only one airplane was lost. Italo Balbo was one of Italy's great aviators, although in charge of Mussolini's Air Force he was opposed to Mussolini's alliance with Nazi Germany and was hostile to anti-semitism. This extremely rare little trophy was to commemorate the tenth anniversary flight. Made by Lorioli of Milan, Italy in 1933. This miniature model is a fine replica of the actual seaplane, without any damage, the bronze supporting ball has a couple of small dents and the heavy steel base has minor nickel plating loss. Overall a rare historic item in good condition.
