Antique Folk Art Florist Sign

Description | I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to buy back this beautiful and unusual florist sign that I sold several years ago. I buy very few signs, but this is definitely my favorite of any I've owned. The wood sign is made of 3 thin layers of wood, glued together. The artist then delicately cut-out scrolls all the way around the sign. The top rail of the sign is the same wood from which the sign is cut…..meaning the scrolls are completely cut from within the open areas so that the sign is one continuous piece. The wood is then screwed into a metal hanger that was painted by the sign painter to match the brilliant colors of the sign (see the photo below as the metal hanger is only seen from the pansy side of the sign). I originally purchased the sign without a hanger for the wall. My furniture conservationist made the scrolled and painted wooden wall brace that you see in the photos. It is such a wonderful match to the wonderful colors and exuberant scrolled design of the sign that no one will guess that it isn't original unless you tell them. The original iron hanger fits into grooves cut into the wooden brace. Ultimately, the brace hangs from a picture hanger attached to the back of the added wood piece. Super easy, super eye-catching! A vase of roses is centered on one side, and a vase of pansies on the other. The wooden brace is the tallest point and measures 29". The widest point of the sign hangs 32" from the wall. Great vibrant yellows, greens, rose, purple and other colors. Minor losses are consistent with age and use. I think you can see all bumps and bruises in the photos, but I'm happy to send larger photos and give you a detailed condition report. Circa late 19th century. A great piece of folk art! | ||||||||
