Antique Sculptural Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket
-
Description
A visually arresting Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket that is more a sculpture than a vase. The open design was largely achieved through an expert hand and almost exclusively the bundled weaving technique. The flattened bamboo strips were manipulated into a tall shape of vase with a pair of ear handles, yet it is not a conventional vase at all. The body consists of three independent tunnel-like volumes that slightly twist together, connecting the common base and the upper opening. The design renders the piece in a none-transitional appearance with an unexpected quality of modern sculpture. It has an old sticker from a gallery in CA. It is likely dated to 1930-50s.
