This was has been examined by several east coast antique dealers and all agree this is a very early trade hat sign.
A wonderful early antique handmade, hand painted, metal top hat used as a trade sign. Several layers of original paint can be seen. Various metal contraptions/brackets are attached to the hat inside and out where the maker or owner attached the hat to a bracket which was attached to a building. Assorted nicks with wonderful chippy paint but overall nice condition for being over 200 years old. A few long-time antique dealers have looked at this sign and the consensus is that it’s from around Circa 1800-1860. Some have said it could be pre-1800.
Antique trade signs are a very desirable and displayable items that were originally made to advertise a business. Many have a wonderful patina as they aged outside the shop or business for many years. Apothecary signs, as well as signs from the offices of doctors and dentists are especially collectible. Old tavern or pub signs are sought after too. While some are three dimensional figures carved from wood, others are painted wooden boards or made from sheet metal.
