Condition Good. Antonio Salvador Orodea Tall Cylindrical Vessel
Creation Date circa 1965
Description Tall and narrow quasi-natualistic cylindrical vessel with incised stippled patterning by Madrid ceramic artist Antonio Salvador Orodea, principal of the ASO factory. Part of a collection associated with the 1964/65 Wold’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, for which Orodea provided concentric ring risers that complemented Javiar Carvajal’s interior architecture. The present textured vessel relates to work by ceramists such as Tue Poulsen; other vessels conjure La Borne potters such as Elisabeth Julia (see additional listings). Orodea’s dialogue with his European contemporaries was based on direct experience: after beginning his education in Madrid, he spent time studying ceramics arts in the German ceramic center of Selb, then in France and Belgium. When Orodea said, in a 1973 newspaper interview, “my intent is that, in my works, artistic inspiration, artisan experience, and the conception of industrial design should be integrated” he was expressing a program for his factory similar to that of the renowned Italian design firm Danese. This innovative program continued beyond the 1964/65 World’s Fair with Evolution 66, a Spanish “Good Design” exhibition in Madrid in 1966, with murals for the Algerian Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan, and with a gold medal at the International Handicraft Fair in Munich in 1971. These and other efforts propelled Orodea beyond his local market onto a national and international stage. Provenance: from the collection of a party responsible for fabricating the displays for the Spanish Pavilion in 1964. Incised marks underneath an paper label underneath.
