    White Porcelain Jar, 1960s-70s
    Porcelain with matte white glaze
    Size 8¾ x 8¼ x 8¼ in. (22.5 x 21 x 21 cm)

    Signed on the base Ryūzō. Comes with the original fitted paulownia-wood tomobako storage box inscribed Hakuji tsubo (White porcelain jar) and signed Ryūzō with red seal Ryūzō

    Born in Kyoto, graduated Kyōto Shiritsu Bijutsu Kōgei Gakkō (Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts) in 1923; in 1924 studied Western painting at Kansai Bijutsuin (Kansai Art Academy), encouraged to take up ceramics by his grandfather. In 1951 founded the avant-garde ceramic group Hakushokukai with Kusube Yaichi and others. First exhibited at Teiten in 1929, member of Nitten from 1955, Professor at Kyōto Kōgei Sen’i Daigaku (Kyoto Institute of Technology) from 1961 to 1970, prize-winner at the Prague International Ceramic Exhibition (1962), Monbu Daijin Prize in 1964, showed at the Gendai Nihon Tōgei Ten (Contemporary Ceramic Art Exhibition) and served on its board. From 1945 did inlaid wares, sometimes also blue-and-white, but in his later years specialized in matte porcelain with distinctive linear decoration, as here.
