A Japanese Woven Basket Bamboo Art Signed Chikusen

Sold Sold
  • Description
A piece of Bamboo art from Japan, circa mid-late 20th century. It was expertly woven in the form of a shallow open basket with wide rim, known in Japanese as "Morikago". This kind of basket is traditionally used for displaying fruits during the sencha tea ceremony, which differs from Macha by using loose green tea leaves instead of ta powder. The fruits are loosely displayed so not to obscure the visibility of the intricate woven pattern on the base.
By examining the woven techniques of the basket, the highlight is obviously the geometrical design in the center of the base, with interconnected roundels filled with radiating star patterns. This is a more complex variation of the "Hexagonal Plaiting", which is demanding for the artist make. It is placed on the inside of the base for visibility on top of a "Celmantis Plaiting" base. Delicately crafted with thinly split bamboo, the body of the basket is transitioning from the base using 'Pine Needle Plaiting" to "Square Plaiting" then back to "Pin Needle Plaiting" at the rim. These alternation allows the basket has stability at the base and the rim, but an airy quality on the body to allow the light in. The piece is coated with a very light lacquered finish and signed on the a plank on the base: Chikusen.
