The circular straight-sided aqua-colored bowl or jardiniere with a slightly flaring side is painted with Chinese Dogs on the exterior amongst auspicious symbols and on the interior with boys at play around the side of the interior while in the center of the bowl there is painted a boy sitting on the ground holding a small wooden box and surrounded by various objects including a flowering lotus, a garden seat, etc.

Dimensions: 4 inches high x 7-inch diameter.

Mark: Seal script- Pseudo-Qianlong mark in red on the base.

According to Terese Tse Bartholomew in "Hidden Meaning in Chinese Art", Page 63, published on the occasion of the exhibition "Hidden Meaning: Symbolism in Chinese Art", presented by the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco from October 7 through December 31, 2006, several boys playing together= Boys at play (yingxi tu). Boys at play typify the Chinese desire for many sons, particularly noble sons who will pass the civil service exam with high honors. Chinese couples are expected to produce sons soon after their marriage who will perpetuate the family name and continue to worship the ancestors (Page 58).

The exterior of the bowl is covered with different images of Chinese dogs-Pekingese of different colors and various flowers and symbols. One of these is a bowl holding a coral branch and feathers. Coral branch and peacock feathers= May you achieve the highest official rank. Officials of the highest rank wore a coral knob and peacock feather on their hats (Page 107, 5.5.1).

Another symbol found on the exterior of a stone chime on a ribbon, the chime is a pun for "celebrate" and "auspicious happiness".
