    Decorative betel box from Burma, circa 1900.
    Lacquered cylindrical body in bamboo decorated overall in red lacquer with geometric motifs.
    The cover lifting to reveal a conforming interior compartment housing both its original trays used to hold betel leaves along with ingredients used for making betel quid which is an indigenous form of chewing tobacco.

    In many southeast Asian cultures, offering guests a betel quid to chew was the fundamental symbol of hospitality.
