Responding to the major societal shifts, aftermaths of wars, and technological innovations, later 20th century design movements were defined by upheavals. Art and design went hand in hand, and utilitarian objects were no exceptions as these stunning candlesticks show.

Unlike many of the strictly functional designs of the early 20th century, the decade’s second half saw the emergence of pieces that were mostly design objects with functionality having only a secondary role. The unique look of this pair of candlesticks is quite inspiring, whether it stirs up images of a shimmering beehive or that of round churn shaped brass metric weights. With a defined, sculptural appearance, these candlesticks are impressive both in material and visual terms. The solid brass bodies consist of five elements on different levels; the base is the most robust in a cylinder shape, supporting the three middle parts that are identical. Their look resembles that of cymbals, showing how brass can be formed under the hands of a master craftsman. At the top, the last element is facing up with a hole in the middle to serve as the cup to keep the candle in place. The design is most suitable for pillar candles, however any type could be used since a soft, warm light that is very pleasing to the eye is guaranteed thanks to the shiny brass.

Designers used their skills to implement new aesthetic ideas and styles which began to treat form, material, and technology in a completely new way. This pair of candlesticks has an inherently modern aesthetic that defined a whole era of design that is still popular today.

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass has a beautiful patina with some marks.
