Description
One of the most striking and extraordinary Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this bronze sculpture of Salammbô, first made famous by Flaubert in the 1860s, dramatically shows only the upper part of the subject's head, surmounted by an Art Deco crown enriched with enamels and a faceted ruby. The sculpture doubles as a covered box that may have originally served as a humidor, all mounted on a stepped-back base of Portoro marble. Salammbô was popularized by Gustave Flaubert in 1862, telling the story of her part in Carthage's conflict with the Roman republic in 3rd Century B.C., and is rife with sensuality and violence -- catnip to writers, artists and composers ever since. Alphonse Mucha, for example, painted a half-nude Salammbô figure, with a headress of peacock feathers in a heady Art Nouveau setting, and both Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky attempted operas based on her story. The sculptor was Fanny Rozet, an important woman sculptor working in France at the height of the Art Deco period.
