Description Classical Patinated Bronze Sculpture of Diana by Ferdinand Barbedienne
French, late 19th Century
Dimensions: Height 60cm, width 40cm, depth 28cm

This superb patinated bronze sculpture depicts the goddess of the hunt, Diana. She is depicted in a dynamic active pose, as if in mid-hunt. Glancing over her right shoulder, her right arm is raised to draw an arrow from her quiver, while her left holds the antlers of a small deer. She is dressed in a Classically draped dress, with sandals on her feet and her wavy hair piled up on her head.

This particular sculpture is by famed fondeur Ferdinand Barbedienne, who presided over one of the most renowned and prolific foundries of Belle Époque Paris. Barbedienne’s atelier created high quality sculptures such as this and his works were shown at numerous international exhibitions of the period, where he won multiple awards. Here, he took inspiration from an original Roman era sculpture, Diana of Versailles, which was designed after a lost Greek bronze from c. 325 BCE.

The sculpture is signed 'F. Barbedienne Fondeur' and stamped.
