Framed Japanese Textile Art Meiji Period

Description
A Japanese decorated silk panel that was framed and made into a fireplace screen. Great care of taken by expert hands to create this panel by using a combination of Yuzen resist dye, painting and embroidery of couching stiches in gold threads. It depicts a poetic nocturnal scene with a white egret standing in the shallow water on one foot under a weeping willow. A full moon is half hidden in the clouds. One can feel the breeze that flirts with the willow and is enjoyed by the bird. The motion is in perfectly reflected in the stillness. The workmanship is superb when examined in details. The resistant dye created a meticulous gradience of color and a subtly shifting dimension. The moon, the cloud, the water all blended in like a painting. The willow branches were painted so beautifully in a manner that is realistic and stylized at the same time. The embroidery accent tassels were done sparsely, this together with the size, suggest that this panel might have been made as a fukusa panel for a special gift giving. The overlook of the piece calls in mind the paintings and prints by Watanabe Shotei and Ohara Koson. There is a kanji signature in seal form "Kobun" on the lower right but it is not identified. The black wood frame with fitted with conforming stands on dowels and the back in completely sealed.
