Description
"Nébuleuse" by Gilles Charbin 1974
sign G. CHARBIN 1974
After completion of his studies at
Ecole des métiers d'art in the
1960's, Gilles Charbin obtained a diploma
from Ecole nationale des
Beaux-Arts. In 1966 he exhibits his
paintings at the Jacques Verrières gallery
in Lyon. In the 1970's, his work
privileges resin as the exclusive material
from which he creates his sculptures,
furniture and decorative
objects.
He becomes a renowned figure of the
Salon des Métiers d'Art at porte de Versailles in Paris and regularly
exhibits his work in Milan and Paris salons. His collaboration
with architects and decorators in the 1970's and 1980's is then
noticed and well acclaimed.
His work in the 1990's and 2000's brings him back to traditional
artistic techniques and he dedicated himself to teaching
drawing and painting and publishes several books. His resin
pieces presented at the Canavèse Gallery are all original works
which are particularly elaborate and a true revelation of the
artist's expert hand.
The metal inclusions and composite materials play on the resin's
transparency in order to express oceanic or even abyssal depth.
Where light is absorbed, it then moves outward, as if constantly
reinvented by a poet. The precious material chosen by the artist
and composed by him, in the manner of a painter, through the
additional process of subtle layering is already a work of art in
itself as it marvelously well represents a formal universe which
is half mineral, half aquatic and not in the least lacking an
evocation of seashells. These sculptures' rounded shapes guide
and distill the pleasure of looking as much as they provoke the
desire to be touched. Their chromatic harmony has the delicacy
of rare lights which truly give to things a real sense of the
unexpected.
