Description A four-case Japanese lacquer inro decorated with Maki-e by Shiomi Masanari family member. The front and back of this inro is decorated with two rats in a continuous scroll fashion in black (eyes) and deep brown (furs) hiramaki-e and with silver togidashi-e (ears and rings on the tails), set on a dense gold fundame background. It has a dark near black lacquer interior and signed with a red seal Shiomi Masanari.
Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722), a talented painter of the Kano school in the Edo period, is best known for his lacquer work. He founded one of the most important family of lacquer artists that lasted for many generation until 19th century. The Shiomi family specialized in togidashi-e technique and were famous for their work of extremely high quality. Successive generations continued using "Shiomi Masanari" thus it is difficult to pinpoint down the date of the pieces signed in such a way. This example was most likely made by a later family member in late 18th to early 19th century.
For a nearly identical inro with the same rats design, see lot 392 in Christie's sale The Japanese Aesthetic on May 14th 2013.
