Description An antique wood netsuke circa 19th century. It depicts a wolf embracing a skeleton. Signed as shown. The pair alludes to the failed love story of Komachi and Fukakasa Shosho. Fukakasa was a tempestuous general who died in vain to prove his love for Komachi. He was represented by the wolf, while Komachi by the skeleton as she survived into a loveless old age. The pair symbolizes the vanity and folly of life in Japanese folklore culture.
