Jeff Martin Glass Excavated Vessels EV-19

Sold Sold
  • Description
Using remnants from his cork casting methods for furniture and mirror production, Jeff is sculpting a continuing body of work in which glass is blown into. He effectively sculpts negative space which glass expands into the mold.
As the molds are removed, oxygen floods between the molten glass and it's mould counterpart and acts as an ignition source. Fire scorches the surface of the cork meaning there is only one chance to use the molds before they are destroyed.
Each time the work is excavated from the cork, it is seen for the first time.

Glass is the chosen material for these vessels as the fluidity, immediacy, and intuition of glass working is in conversation with the surprise and wonder of primitive sculpture.
The result of this studio specific method is an object of a cosmic spirit, which look like glaciers, mountain ranges, snow drifts, rock faces, ice caves, and tidal pools hurled into outer space.

Message from Seller:

Pavilion is the collective vision of Deborah Colman and Neil Kraus, both graduates of the master of fine arts program at the Art Institute of Chicago. From a longstanding interest in art and design, frequent buying trips to France and Italy have influenced the direction of the gallery to offer items that are not easily sourced in Chicago and United States. Postwar design has been the focus for 18 yrs and we also look forward to new design that crosses boundaries and dialogues as well to the past
